Evergreen watches, what are they? Watches that have been on the market for over twenty years, or long enough to seem ubiquitous.

Today it is the turn of the Rolex Explorer ref. 114270 from 2001.

The Explorer is Rolex’s sports watch with the best fit. Let us remember that the Explorer was the first sports watch from the house of Rolex and yet it has been evolved yes but without distorting it. This is the secret of its great success. So, yes, for me the Rolex Explorer is still a very current watch. But before I tell you why, let’s go over some basics.

It has a 36 mm Oyster case, a black dial with numerals at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, a Mercedes hour hand and a lollipop seconds hand. The previous references Oyster, 6610, 1016, 14270 all had the usual standard and features.

In 2001, the ref.114270 was introduced. Exactly the same as its predecessor and, just like the latest version of the 14270, it featured Super-Luminova-treated indices. The only real differences were the solid end links and the 3130 movement. Those more robust end links and the more shock-resistant movement were the main reasons why this model is among the most reliable. In 2010, Rolex stopped production of the 114270 and introduced the 39 mm 214270 but that is another story.
